Five Techniques I use to Manage BPD: A Personal Journey Towards Emotional Well-being

Living with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) can present unique challenges, but it doesn’t mean that we are powerless in our journey towards emotional well-being. In this blog post, I will share five techniques that have personally helped me manage my BPD symptoms. These techniques encompass mindfulness, prioritizing sleep and rest, embracing creativity, journaling, and the healing power of getting outside.


Practicing mindfulness has been a game-changer in managing my BPD symptoms. By being fully present in the moment and non-judgmentally aware of my thoughts and emotions, I have learned to observe them without immediate reaction. This practice has allowed me to cultivate self-compassion, reduce impulsivity, and enhance emotional regulation.

Sleep and Rest:

Prioritizing sleep and rest is essential for maintaining emotional stability. BPD often leaves us feeling emotionally drained, so ensuring adequate sleep helps regulate mood swings and minimize irritability. Establishing a calming bedtime routine, creating a peaceful sleep environment, and carving out time for relaxation can promote improved sleep quality and overall well-being.


Engaging in creative activities has had a profound impact on my mental health. Whether it’s painting, writing, playing an instrument, or any other form of creative expression, it provides an outlet for emotions and encourages self-expression. The act of creating allows me to channel my energy into something positive and constructive, often resulting in a sense of accomplishment and emotional release.


Keeping a journal has proven to be an invaluable tool for self-reflection and insight. By putting pen to paper, I can explore my thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a safe and non-judgmental space. Journaling helps me identify patterns, triggers, and areas of growth, providing a deeper understanding of my emotions and facilitating personal growth. It also serves as a valuable resource to track progress and celebrate achievements.

Getting Outside:

Nature has a remarkable ability to heal and restore our well-being. Spending time outdoors, whether it’s going for a walk in the park, hiking, or simply sitting in a garden, can have a calming effect on the mind and body. The beauty of nature provides a welcome distraction from overwhelming thoughts and allows us to reconnect with ourselves and the present moment.

Managing BPD requires dedication, self-awareness, and a commitment to self-care. By incorporating techniques such as mindfulness, prioritizing sleep and rest, embracing creativity, journaling, and getting outside, we can develop effective strategies for managing our symptoms and nurturing our emotional well-being. Remember, each person’s journey is unique, so it’s essential to explore what works best for you through experimentation and self-discovery. Together, we can thrive and lead fulfilling lives despite the challenges that BPD may present.
